Unlike standard wood burning stoves, a soapstone heater uses the soapstone mass to store the heat, and slowly radiates it over a period of time. The heat released by the soapstone, very much feels like the heat from the sun when you sit in a sunroom. This type of heat is a lot more comfortable than the heat created by standard wood stoves, which heat by convection , like your baseboard and radiator heaters do, creating an intense uncomfortable, short lived heat which gives you dry skin, dry nose, etc.

The soapstone wood stove/masonry heater, works like your cell phone battery: When you are burning wood for 2 to 3 hours, it's like when your cell phone is plugged in the charger. Then you stop burning wood, but the soapstone will  continue to radiate heat for hours , like when you unplug your cell phone and continue to use it all day long. 

This is achieved by the efficient way in which wood is

burned and used. The soapstone heater is a contraflow heater, which is designed with inner channels that guide the burnt gases , circulating it up and down the inner channels and by doing this, all stones absorb that energy/heat, before releasing out the chimney. In standard wood stoves, all that energy goes straight up the chimney, and for the most part wasted.
